If you want brighter, dimensional hair but are torn between **balayage** and **highlights**, you’re not alone. Both techniques lighten selected strands, but they create very different finishes and maintenance routines. Here’s a clear guide from our Wolviston colour team to help you choose with confidence.

## The quick definitions

- **Balayage:** A freehand painting method where your colourist “sweeps” lightener onto the surface of the hair. It’s placed away from the roots and focused through mid-lengths and ends for a soft, sun-kissed blend with natural movement.
- **Highlights:** Fine sections are woven or sliced, saturated with lightener and wrapped in foils (or pulled through a cap). This gives a brighter, more uniform result from root to tip.

## How they’re applied

**Balayage** relies on an artistic eye. Your stylist paints lighter pieces where the sun would naturally hit, graduating the brightness so there’s no harsh start-and-stop line. It’s brilliant for face-framing and for adding ribbons of light through layers and curls.

**Foil highlights** use precision sectioning for control and lift. Foils incubate the lightener, pushing it lighter and more evenly. We can vary the weave for a fine, blended look or go bolder for high contrast.

Often, we’ll **mix methods**—for example, a few face-frame foils for extra pop with balayage through the lengths for softness.

## The finished look

- **Balayage:** Lived-in, multi-tonal, and seamless. The root stays deeper with brightness building towards the ends. Think subtle luxury rather than obvious streaks.
- **Highlights:** Crisp, even brightness throughout, with a clean, classic result. Great if you love a lighter overall look or want to lift darker hair significantly.

## Maintenance and grow-out

- **Balayage:** Lower maintenance. Because the colour starts away from the scalp, grow-out is soft and forgiving. Many clients visit every **10–16 weeks**, topping up with a gloss toner to refresh shine and tone.
- **Highlights:** Higher maintenance. Root regrowth is more visible, so most clients refresh every **6–8 weeks**. A toner between appointments keeps brassiness in check.

## Hair condition, tone and texture

Lightening removes some natural oils and proteins, so **care matters**. We’ll protect your hair with bond-building care and recommend a sulphate-free routine at home.

- **Fine hair** often loves micro-foils for the illusion of fullness.
- **Thick or curly hair** looks beautiful with balayage ribbons that enhance movement.
- **Skin tone:** Warm complexions suit honey, caramel and golden tones; cooler skin glows with beige, ash and pearl. We can fine-tune with toner for your most flattering shade.

## Cost and time

Balayage tends to cost more **upfront** because of the hand-painted placement and finish time, but you’ll visit less often. Highlights are usually quicker to apply and can cost less per session, though the **more frequent maintenance** may balance things out over time.

## How to choose

Pick **balayage** if you want:

- A natural, effortless finish with soft grow-out
- Dimension without a heavy root commitment
- A modern look that suits waves, curls and layered cuts

Pick **highlights** if you want:

- Clean, brighter results from root to tip
- Classic blonde or strong contrast on darker bases
- A structured pattern that reads polished and light

Still not sure? Bring a couple of reference photos. We’ll assess your base colour, cut, skin tone and lifestyle, then design a plan that fits your maintenance preference and budget.

## Your appointment at Kutting Korner

4. **Toning:** The finishing step that perfects the shade—cool, neutral or warm—and adds shine.
5. **Finish & care:** We style to reveal the dimension and set you up with a simple at-home routine.
